Herning - Things to See and Do Part 1

1. HEART - Herning Museum of Contemporary Art. The HEART Museum opened in 2009 and reflects the city of Herning`s desire to creat more cultural and entertainment attractions in the city. Art lovers will certainly enjoy this modern art museum. The museum building was designed by the American architect Steven Holl. The museum houses an impressive collection of modern art. Of course the majority of the art is of Danish origin, however it is also the home of the largest collection of works by the Italian conceptual artist Piero Manzoni.

2. Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelts Museum (Carl-Henning Pedersen og Else Alfelts Museet). This modern art museum was without a doubt the best art museum in Herning prior to the construction of the HEART - Herning Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum is still well worth a visit for those with an interest in art. The museum hasn’t been replaced as the best art museum by the new museum. There is simply no longer a clear number one. Well worth mentioning is the 90 metre long ceramic frieze designed by Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelts on the exterior of the building. The very uniquely sculptured exhibition buildings are in itself a huge experience. The museum holds more than 4000 modern artworks.

3. Blicher Museum - Herningholm (Blichermuseet - Herregården Herningholm). The small museum is dedicated to the life and works of the regions most famous Danish writer and poet Steen Steensen Blicher (1782-1848). Blicher never achieved international success such as Hans Christian Andersen and Karen Blixen, however in Denmark he was very famous. The museum is housed in a beautiful manor house which was built in 1579. The home is the oldest building in Herning, and a portion of the museum tells the interesting history of the building. The museum is located on Viborgvej 72.

4. Herning Church (Herning Kirke). This church designed by architect C.A. Wiinholt was built in the Romanesque style in 1889. The most impressive artefact in the church is Joakim Skovgaard painted altarpiece which was completed in 1915. The painting shows Jesus preaching in a synagogue. The architect of the Herning Church (C.A.Wiinholt) also designed the Bethania Missionary House (Missionshuset Bethania) which is located on the other side of the street.

5. Herning Museum (Herning Museet). Herning Museum is a three-winged building. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of life in the area of central Jutland (Jylland) from the Stone Age up until the present day. There is an outdoor section of the museum which has a traditional Danish Middle Age home which shows visitors how the average Dane lived at the time. There an indoor section which exhibits the importance of the manufacturing of textiles in the region. Located next door to Herning Museum is Denmark’s Photograph Museum (Danmarks fotomuseum). The museum tells the story about the history of photography, and holds a large collection of old cameras.

6. Denmark’s Photograph Museum (Danmarks Fotomuseum). Denmark’s Photograph Museum is an excellent museum for those with an interest in photography. The museum has an abundance of old cameras, camera equipment and old photographs on display. Herning Museum is next door to the Photography Museum.

7. MCH Herning Messecenter (MCH Herning Messecenter). When the first building for the Messecenter was built in 1954 it is hard to believe that the city of Herning knew how important the Messecenter would become to the city. The Messecenter has many trade shows, exhibitions, sporting events, concerts and other cultural events all year round. Close to 1000000 people visit the Messecenter each year. 8. MCH Herning Conference Centre (MCH Herning Kongrescenter). Herning Conference Centre could rightfully be considered a part of Herning’s Messecenter though they are not located in the same place. Both centres have put Herning on the map in terms of offering trade shows, exhibitions, concerts, sporting events and many more cultural events. In any given year the Conference Centre hosts around 200 events, and has around 250000 visitors. 200 The Conference Centre was built in 1986, and was designed by the architectural firm Friis og Moltke.
