Covid19 Schools and Daycare Closures

Schools and Daycare Closure

All public schools and daycare facilities will be closed for two weeks, beginning Monday, March 16, 2020.

The government has decided on March 11 that students and students of all public educational institutions will be sent home as soon as possible and by Friday, March 13, 2020 for a fortnight. Private institutions are encouraged to do the same. For dietary students, it must be agreed locally which students can stay at the school until the school reopens.

All public schools and daycare facilities will be closed from Monday, March 16, 2020 and for a fortnight. Municipalities establish emergency care. Grandparents should not look after children if they are particularly vulnerable to coronavirus / covid-19 due to age or health. Private institutions are encouraged to do the same. For after-school, it must be agreed locally which students can stay at the school until the school reopens. The government is calling on all parents and families who can to keep the children home from tomorrow.

The government's goal is for students to have as much education as possible during the period when they do not have to physically attend their school.

The situation is constantly evolving and the Ministry of Children and Education will continue the dialogue with the sector and share information with the country's day-care institutions and schools as soon as possible.

Criteria for emergency care

Municipalities provide emergency care at institutions and schools. The municipalities must each make a detailed description of the criteria for emergency care in each municipality, and the specific rules will be issued as soon as possible.

However, the government has set out these three broadly planned criteria for who can be emergency:

  • 0-9 year old children whose parents perform critical functions in public. Parents must have looked for other care options
  • 0-9 year old children whose parents are employed in a private company that has not returned their employees. Parents must have looked for other care options
  • Children and adolescents who have special social, educational or treatment needs, including cases where conditions in the child's or adolescent's home justify an emergency care service.
  • We encourage all parents to keep their children at home as far as possible.
