Copenhagen Zoo - Zoologisk Have København

Copenhagen Zoo (Zoologisk Have) first opened in 1859 which makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. The Zoo is located about 3 km away from central Copenhagen. The zoo has pledged to continually strive towards improving the quality of life for the animals.

Copenhagen Zoo is very proud of their new Elephant House which was designed by world renowned British architect Sir Norman Foster. The new Elephant House opened in March 2008. The new space for the elephants is a perfect example of Copenhagen Zoo’s ongoing goal of improving the living standards of the animals. The indoor area of the Elephant House is approximately 5 times larger than the old one, and the outdoor area is approximately 4 times larger than the old one. There are also many other high tech improvements which help maintain a clean and healthy living environment for the elephants.

When the zoo first opened in 1859 the types and variety of animals on display was pretty limited, as you would expect so long ago. There were some common species of birds such as chickens, ducks and owls. Perhaps the most exotic animal on hand was a seal. The zoo has changed enormously since then.

Today visitors to the Zoo can expect to see a wide variety of animals which are being treated very humanely. There are animals from every continent in the world and the zoo is opened 365 days a year. There are daily feeding times for some of the animals. So visitors may be fortunate enough to watch their favourite animal eat.

There is also a special section where children can get up close and personal with the animals. They can go for a pony ride, pet rabbits, play with goats and even touch snakes.

Copenhagen Zoo is fortunate enough to have the only Tasmanian Devils in captivity outside of Australia. The Zoo is involved in a variety of conservation projects throughout the world in countries such as Malaysia and Brazil. The zoo is heavily involved in studying the behaviour of animals, and developing animal conservation strategies.

In 2009 the Zoo celebrated its 150 year anniversary.
