Djurs Sommerland
Djurs Sommerland is an amusement park located in North Eastern Jutland (Jylland). The park is located near the town of Nimtofte, and it is approximately 40 km North East of Denmark’s second largest town, Aarhus (Århus). The park is also about 35 km East from Randers.
The park suits the same purpose as Faarup Sommerland (Fårup Sommerland) on the North Western side of Jutland. Most people done realize this, but both coasts of Northern Jutland have some of the finest beaches in all of Europe. Great beaches and Denmark might not immediately spring to mind, yet each year tourists from all over Europe flock to Denmark to make use of their great beaches and summer homes. Therefore each summer tourists saturate this area of Denmark, and it is only natural that Djurs Sommerland and Faarup Sommerland sprang up.
Djurs Sommerland opened in 1981, and has the park has undergone many expansions since. The park is only opened between May and the end of September each year. The park has over 60 fun-filled rides and attractions. The park is a great place to bring the family.
Generally the park does not have many big, exciting roller coasters like Faarup Sommerlund, but the one exception is ‘The Pirate’ (Piraten). ‘The Pirate’ makes up for the limited amount of roller coasters at Djurs Sommerland, and ‘The Pirate’ is arguably the best rollercoaster in Denmark. In fact ‘The Pirate’ was voted as the 5th best steel roller coaster in the world in 2008. This roller coaster is the fastest and highest in Denmark with a top speed of 90 km/h and a maximum height of 32 meters. Keep in mind there is a height restriction of 140cm on this ride. There is another decent roller coaster called ‘Thors Hammer’.
Djurs Sommerland has a water park complete with many different types of waterslides, a wave pool and a special water park for the little ones. Any trip to Djurs requires a swimsuit. There is also a mini golf course, an assortment of jungle gyms, trampolines, inflatable trampolines, 4 person bikes, 4 person pedal boats and an enormous ball land.
Djurs has an impressive Cowboy and Indian Land (Cowboy og Indianerland) where children and grown ups can pan for gold, try the shooting range or simply enjoy the pleasant re-constructed western town. The park also has plenty of rides and attractions for the young children.
Generally the park doesn’t have the big, expensive, adrenaline filled rides (with the exception of ‘The Pirate’ of course). What the park does have is many smaller, very clever rides and attractions. That and an enormous amount of variety to keep yourself and the whole family entertained.
